PhD Programme Admission, PhD Applicant and Doctoral Programmes Enrollment

PhD Programme

 

PhD programme admission is held on a competitive basis and is intended for applicants possessing a master’s degree or a specialist diploma, in the case of medical specialities – qualification of a physician, in the case of clinical medical specialities – qualification of a specialist physician.

For admission to a PhD programme, an application is submitted by a person or his/er attorney addressed to the head of the institution with the following documents attached:

  1. copies of bachelor’s and master’s degrees or specialist diplomas, or diplomas of graduation of residency and their supplements (for those who have received higher education in foreign countries, a document on the recognition of qualifications),
  2. foreign language and information and communications technologies (ICT) exam certificates or other relevant reference (assessed with account of the lowest passing grade)
  3. the photocopy of at least one published research article in the scope of the chosen speciality, or a research paper of no less than 20 printed pages,
  4. CV and three photos (3 x 4),
  5. excerpt from the service record (if applicable).

Admission to the full-time PhD programme with full reimbursement of tuition (hereinafter referred to as free) by the state in the form of allowances for students with the right to defer from compulsory military service is carried out over the period provided by the decree of the Government of the Republic of Armenia on the organization of conscription of the given year.

Admission to the PhD programme with partial reimbursement of tuition by the state in the form of allowances for students (hereinafter referred to as paid) is carried out over the period established by the institution.

To undertake the admission, by order of the head of the higher education institution or scientific organization offering doctoral studies, an admission commission is set up, chaired by the head or deputy head of the institution.

The prospective PhD student is permitted to take the speciality exam in the presence of exam certificates and (or) references in a foreign language and information and communications technologies (ICT) with a note on the assessment received, as well as in the presence of a positive expertise of the research paper issued by the chair (section, department) in the given speciality, or in presence of a positive expertise on the research paper issued by the scientific department of the institution, or a certified list of research articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The minimum required passing grade in information and communications technologies (ICT) is 25, and the minimum passing grades in foreign languages is

  1. English “TOEFL” (iBT) – 46 and “IELTS” – 5.5
  2. French “TCF” – 200
  3. German “onDaF” – 60.

* The applicants for whom the English, French and German languages are a subject of their major, shall take an exam in another language.

The prospective PhD student who scores the most points from the exam in speciality is enrolled in the PhD programme. In case there are two or more prospective PhD students with the same amount of points, the following indicators are taken into account in the order given below:

  1. general average qualifying score of a master or specialist or intern,
  2. general average qualifying score of a bachelor and master,
  3. number of research publications,
  4. diplomas received at international or republican student subject competitions or Olympiads, or participation in international conferences (reports).

Based on the competition results, the admission commission makes a decision on the account of each of the applicants. Applicants receive a notification of the decision on PhD programme enrollment or refusal within seven working days from the date the exam in speciality is taken.

The admission to a PhD programme is carried out by order of the head of the institution. A contract is concluded with the PhD student. Students enrolled to the full-time PhD programme on a free basis are paid a state scholarship in the amount of a certain sum from the day of their enrollment.

 

PhD Applicant Programme

 

PhD applicant enrollment basic requirement is to hold a master’s degree or a specialist diploma, in the case of medical specialities – qualification of a physician, in the case of clinical medical specialities – qualification of a specialist physician.

PhD applicant enrollment is carried out on a paid and free basis, in accordance with the procedure of enrollment in force at the given institution, the duration of which does not exceed five years.

For PhD applicant enrollment, an application must be submitted by the applicant or his/er attorney addressed to the head of the institution with the following documents attached:

  1. copies of a specialist’s diploma or a master’s or resident’s certificate and annexes to it (for persons who have studied abroad, a certificate of recognition of a document on foreign education and (or) foreign qualification),
  2. certified list of research publications or a research paper in the field of the chosen speciality,
  3. CV and three photos (3 x 4),
  4. excerpt from the service record (if the applicant works).

The PhD applicant enrollment is carried out by order of the head of the institution as per the regulations in force in the given institution. A contract is concluded with him/her.

 

Doctoral Programme

 

To qualify for the doctoral programme one shall hold a PhD degree and submit a fundamental and (or) applied research project of scientific, economic or socio-cultural significance.

The term for doctoral programmes is 3 years. For enrollment into a doctoral programme, an application is submitted by the candidate or his/er attorney addressed to the head of the institution with the following documents attached:

  1. a copy of the PhD diploma (for persons who earned a PhD degree in a foreign state, must also attach the certificate of recognition of the PhD degree document issued by the Supreme Certifying Committee),
  2. the plan of the doctoral dissertation,
  3. CV and three photos (3 x 4),
  4. a list of research publications, inventions and discoveries, as well as reports on research activity.
  5. The doctoral applicant is enrolled by order of the head of the institution as per the regulations in force in the given institution. A contract is concluded with him/her.
